Remember the picture a couple posts ago of the Spanish Steps?? This is at 8:15am... the time to go apparently.

Marcus Aurelius' Column!! (Confirmed by my Ancient Rome expert, Russell!) With St. Paul on top.

Pantheon practically empty!

Pantheon interior shot! (This time when I went i had my nice camera... makes a difference.)

Raphael's tomb in the Pantheon, two doves. I thought this was pretty... took the picture specially for you, Mom!!!

Another day of getting lost and painting

LOVE this balcony. It is really cute, and has a pretty rail.

Today I walked by the Spanish Steps. Um... crowded much? haha

It struck me as funny to see this big pop MTV event with hundreds of hipster California look-alikes in this ancient piazza. Behind me taking the picture is an obelisk I think 3,000 years old...

New developments on the painting.

Critique and getting completely lost

Yesterday and today I spent the majority of my time wandering and getting to know the city. And that is the fancy way of saying I got completely lost twice or three times if you count Monday in there, too. Poggi, the Holy Grail of oil flesh colors, was finally found! Monday there was the search, Tuesday there was the find and today it was actually open! Yesterday after finding it I just wandered around and ended up once again at the Pantheon, then down a narrow street that lead, coincidentally, to a medieval tower called the Monkey Tower:

Above is the back of a palace that I think was a tribute to the second to last king (built my him, finished my his son) but... I could be wrong because I was completely lost. Completely.

When I finally found the metro I was so happy I took a picture before going down the steps.

Here is the final painting... basically my critique was all the things that bothered different people that amounted to... everything. Haha, the sky was too close to the tube color, the clouds were too cliché, the middle was too flat, the tomatoes too arbitrary. My professor just straight up said "This painting really bugs me." But... at least it's over, right?

Painting and the Trevi Fountain

I took this photo to show a little taste of how many people were there when I stopped by for my first time last night!! Saturday night, just completely packed with tourists. But still great!

The guy who took my photo got really into it. I trusted him with my big camera because he had just asked me to take a picture of him with his big camera... Too bad I have a doofy smile! haha

Current photo of my painting, as you can see the stem has to be painted back in and the shadow needs to be deepened so the tomatoes don't look like they're floating. Again, it seems a little washed out.

Beach in the morning, painting in the afternoon

The beach!

New layer of painting... sort of flat, now going to bring out colors, highlights and shadows.

Il Colosseo

We went to the Colosseum today for Rome Sketchbook!!

ME!!

Under what used to be the stage.

Triumphal arch!! (For Russell... almost bought the same shirt you have but I'm poor...)

Underpainting for the tomato still life. I brought the box of them to keep them from getting crushed, and so that I could pick and choose... the ones that didn't get chosen got 'accidentally' snacked on!

Food and Fabulousness

So I have made two dishes that tasted pretty good... and for someone like me who usually needs an event to cook for myself (even though I love it) this is starting to become normal and also... delicious!

Today I made a pasta that I cooked in vegetable broth, drained, then combined with regular tomato sauce (bleh so blad by itself) GARLIC, pepper, olive oil and lots of oregano. YUM! White wine and Project Runway make this really crappy weather seem really cozy.

A more contextual picture... I was in the Piazza del Popolo for the millionth time today, but decided it was worth taking ANOTHER picture of... this time with me in it. This is where I pass through A LOT to get to the more historical part of Rome from my school. The way the picture is facing, past the obelisk and a few more blocks, is my school. In the opposite direction and sort of leaning to the left (of the picture) lies Mom's future apartment about twenty minutes walk!!

A really beautiful view as I left school today. It was a really dramatic day, tonight on the bus ride home (about ten minutes after this picture) there was TONS of lightning and really loud thunder.

Kind of washed out, but here's my portrait! I wasn't completely thrilled with it, but I think it's started me on a really different path than the other painters in the class. I really want to do portraiture and realism while many of them are doing abstract, moody stuff. At first I was extremely nervous, partly because I feel so excluded from the group (they all know each other from Tyler) and because I'm not from art school, I'm not a painting major. But my T.A. is really really incredible and has given me a lot of ideas for what to do next. I'm supposed to have a connected body of work for the semester and practically a painting a week... wow! A change for me! But what I've been really interested in is oil and the strange colors on the body so that's what I'm going to do in my portraits.

Toscania

Okay, so I got sick from food and was really exhausted and grumpy... but it was very pretty.

This is the medieval church we drew for a while.

The countryside as we walked down to another old church.

Look!! Entertainment while you are at church on Sundays, a little cute depiction of Hell!!

Painted all day, but my painting will be posted when it's done... if I actually like it. (blahhh)

Day at the Borghese

Caravaggio day! I saw this first, then so many many more at another church and then the Borghese Gallery.

A little tiny book store with books piled one after another... can you see inside? So awesome!

A woman I much admire... look at her! She is so aloof and this man is dead on her lap. I just love her facial expression.

The Devil and I are in cahoots!!!

Travels through the Italian Countryside... and BEYOND

Temple Rome takes the students on a trip to see the countryside. This is a medieval town called Todi, that has been preserved perfectly because people just live their lives using the same buildings, the same streets.

A little tiny residence we looked out over with a tiny yard out back.

Looking out over a farm at the castle where we ate that day.

The school!

Mom, there are people in this world just as obsessed (more so!) with dolls. This place, about the size of your closet, is packed with doll parts and two little desks where a guy and his mom repair dolls. (Between the Spanish Steps and Piazza del Popolo.)
